MPM Action Mechanisms
The mechanism of action of BiolActis’ Multi Plex Matrices involves a particular type of lymphocytes cells (Th17 cells) associated with the development and increase of auto-immune and inflammatory diseases (Murphy et al, 2003; Hashimoto et al, 2005; Matusevicius et al, 1999; Nakae et al, 2003). BiolActis’ MPMs demonstrated the capacity to modulate immune system functions by improving body defense and inducing anti-inflammatory systemic effects. The research was done through a five-year collaboration program with the “Institut National de la Recherche Scientifique - Institut Armand-Frappier” (affiliated with “L’Institut Pasteur”).
The modulation of the Th17 immune pathway regulates different metabolic processes. The recent studies have indicated that MPMs are responsible for decreasing the granulocyte-dependant response associated with obesity by lowering macrophage recruitment inside adipose tissues. They also reduce production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-6 and TNF-a, thus blocking negative interactions between adipose tissues and macrophages. Moreover, this process would prevent engaging the metabolic syndrome cascade responsible for the development of Type 2 diabetes, hypertension and hyperlipidemia by inhibiting adipose tissues transformation (Tilg and Moschen, 2006).
Clearly, there is an important correlation between the immune system modulation and metabolic controls such as body weight, hypertension, blood lipids and diabetes management. BiolActis’ results confirmed that the immune system’s modulation can help in restoring homeostasis of a body affected by obesity-associated problems.
This discovery opens the door to the development of innovative products in relation with inflammatory processes. Preventing T lymphocytes to differentiate themselves in Th17 cells has the consequence to strongly reduce or even stop the development of auto-immune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, intestinal inflammatory diseases (Crohn’s disease) and psoriasis.

A Synergistic Approach
The blood lipid regulation may benefit of a metabolic approach where synergy between various components comprised in one product can have a systemic impact.
First, MPMs developed by BiolActis cause a reduction in the absorption of intestinal lipid level thus reducing the circulating lipids.
Following a decrease in lipid absorption, two distinct mechanisms will kick in to regulate the amount of lipids that remain in circulation:
- the natural functions of the liver and
- fat storage by adipose tissues.
BiolActis’ products have demonstrated an improvement in the natural functions of the liver in individuals on high-caloric diets. At the same time, studies on the control of body weight were used to highlight an additional reduction of body fat associated with a normal diet or a slimming diet.
Multiple Impacts on Blood Lipids
One should not forget the conditions inherent to each individual and its hereditary predisposition. This is where a fourth regulatory mechanism related to the immune system plays its role: the reduction of inflammatory processes. The inflammatory process associated with the management of blood lipids involves the production of circulating cytokines and the recruitment of macrophages in the liver and adipose tissues. The products of BiolActis reduce both the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and the recruitment of macrophages at the inflammation sites. These benefits brought through the immune system will improve the management of blood lipids for people suffering from systemic inflammation linked to overweight or for people with a hereditary prevalence in the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines.
This metabolic approach, having multiple actions, will allow the reduction of the response variability to the health benefits of BiolActis’ products. Thus, for a given individual, if one of the mechanisms is ineffective due to his health condition or hereditary factors, complementary mechanisms will still bring the desired health benefits. BiolActis gains from this decrease of variability in the achievement of its clinical studies.
